We took train from Delhi heading to Agra. We have concluded that in India the arrival times for the trains are merely a suggestion, and are never even close! Agra is most famous for The Taj Mahal, and our plan was to arrive early in the morning so we could see the sunrise over the Taj! We arrived at 5:40AM for the 6AM opening and we were one of the first people in line! The ticket for the Taj is ridiculously more expensive for foreigners. We pay 750 Ruppess(about $17) where an Indian only pays 20(.40)!
We were one of the first people to arrive so we got amazing photos of the Taj, we were lucky because within one hour the crowd was huge. The Taj Mahal lives up to everything you hear about it, its a massive marble structure that is beautiful! It was build by Emperor Shan Jahan for his wife that died while giving childbirth to their 14th child. The Emperor was so heartbroken that he built this mausoleum in 1631 for her.
Later on during the HOT day(114 degrees), we headed to the Agra Fort. It was built in 1565 and was used for military purposes, then later as the Emperor Shan Jahan's home, then later as the Jail that Emperor Shan Jahan lived. The Emperor's son seized power and threw is father in Jail, but his father did have a room that allowed him to see the Taj Mahal from a distance.
