Savannakhet - Laos

We left Southern Laos and headed up North to Central Laos to Savannakhet, it took us 5 hours on a bus to get there! The buses in Laos make frequent stops along the way and when they do, people come on to sell food! A trip that should take 3 hours takes 5 instead....so when you get on the bus its best to just sit and relax for the long haul!
One day in Savannakhet we rented a motorbike to go out into the country side to find wild monkeys! We also decided to spend New Years in Savannakhet as well. We met some very nice locals that invited us to a birthday party and then out to a club with them! The people here continue to be extremely kind to us!

One of the many stops along the way!

A New Year's party that was set up outside out guest house!

One of the local Wats in town

A random BMW.....

A local dish that Agustin ate each night while in Savannakhet

Our motorbike that we rented.....it got TWO flat tires on our trip- the SAME tire! Thankfully there are many repair shops, so $2's and 20 minutes, later we were on our way!

The country side

One of the many monkeys we fed! Once it got out that we had bananas every monkey in a mile radius came to get one!

Then the cows heard we were giving out food, they wanted some too! By the end we had goats, pigs, chickens, cows and monkeys begging for food!

Locals feeding the monkeys too!

A monkey and her baby!

This cow got right up to Agustin and pushed his arm!

We love this photo!! The little babies tried to get a banana, but the older monkeys wouldn't let them get close to us.

After our monkey trip we got back on the bike and went about 40 km to this turtle pond. There have been turtles in this pond since anyone can remember. These are special soft shell turtles.
We fed these soft shell turtles as well, but it wasn't very exciting after being with the monkeys!

The last sunset of 2009!

New Year's Eve!

Yummy fried Indian things we found at a street vendor!

Full moon!

Friendly locals that invited us to a New Year's birthday party!

The party! We dont know if it is all the people of Laos or just the couple of parties we went too, but they only had 2 cups that were passed around to drink beer from. So, that meant only 2 people could drink at the same time......they made an exception for us and gave us all our own cup! They honored this "rule" which we couldnt believe! So, at any given time only 2 people can "Cheers" you!

The club we went to for New Years! The Laos like to drink and dance!

Happy New Year!!
